The Tulare County’s March 19 concert is called Locals Night and features solos by orchestra members—concertmaster Susan Doering, principal trumpeter Cooper Walden, and co-principal percussionist Michael Downing.
Doering said she was thrilled when music director Bruce Kiesling asked her to play Monti’s “Czardas” for the concert. “It’s a fun show piece, with great expression and freedom in the slow melancholic first section and wonderful exuberant virtuosity in the faster section.”
Walden will play Haydn’s “Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra.” He calls it the most famous and often performed trumpet concerto. “There aren’t a lot of opportunities here in the Valley to hear the piece live and it’s such an idiomatically ‘trumpet’ piece that everyone loves.”
Downing says Ewazen’s “Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra” is one of the most exciting for both the audience and the performer. “The concerto as a whole is stunning! It is highly energetic and places the highest demand on the performer.”
The final piece in the concert is Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5,” which stands as one of the composer’s most loved large-scale creations.
